KERRVILLE, Tex. – Cal Lutheran men's and women's tennis dominated Schreiner in the second leg of their Texas road trip. Each team swept the Mountaineers 7-0 with impressive performances from start to finish.
The top duos on the men's team set the tone early, with
Ethan Sherwood/
Loup Sudre and
Raphael Simon/
Carlo Drewelow each taking their doubles sets 6-1, securing the first team point for the Kingsmen.
Sherwood battled in his singles match against a talented opponent and ultimately won 10-8 in a third-set tiebreak. The rest of the Kingsmen didn't face nearly as much resistance. Simon,
Andy Ai, Drewelow,
Frederick Otto, and
Jake Anderson each won in straight sets to complete the sweep. Drewelow and Anderson recorded double bagels, while Ai's victory served as the clincher for the second-straight match.
"The guys all played great ball. We've been working on moving forward and finishing at the net more, and we're starting to see that work paying off," said Head Coach
Mike Gennette.
The women played one of the most perfect team matches in program history. It started with 6-0 doubles wins by the duos of
Carmen Bufkin/
Mina Ahmadi and
Maddy Ford/
Kylee Limpias.
Eva Toplak/
Fatima Nemi quickly joined them with a 6-1 victory.
Each Regal won her singles match in straight sets with no signs of trouble. Bufkin finished 6-2, 6-0 while Rajan prevailed 6-4, 6-2. Amazingly, those were the only singles sets in which Cal Lutheran women dropped a set. The #3-6 singles matches were all completely dominated by the Regals, with Ford, Limpias,
Luisa Garcia, and
Evelyn Oltmans each winning 6-0, 6-0. It was a double bagel party in Kerrville.
"Regals tennis was super focused again today. This might be one of the most decisive wins based on scores in Regals history," Gennette said. "I was really impressed with how everyone on the team was focused and got right to work on the court."
When combining all the matches, the Regals won 90 sets to the Mountaineers' nine. It was a day to remember for Cal Lutheran tennis.
Both programs will continue their quest to conquer the Lone Star State tomorrow afternoon against Concordia Texas in Austin at 12pm PT, 2pm local time.
