CLAREMONT, Calif. – Cal Lutheran women's volleyball (18-6, 11-5 SCIAC) wrapped up its regular season on a high note Saturday afternoon, defeating Pomona-Pitzer (10-16, 5-11 SCIAC) in four sets, 25-22, 19-25, 25-19, 25-14.
Cal Lutheran came out composed in the opening set, trading points early in a tightly contested frame. Midway through, the Regals found their rhythm with a string of kills from
Aby Tibesar and
Kaylee Clayton to pull ahead.
Tarin Rueckert capped off the strong start with a decisive kill to secure the 25-22 win and give Cal Lutheran the early lead.
Pomona-Pitzer responded in the second set, capitalizing on Cal Lutheran's attack errors to even the match. Despite several well-placed kills from
Olivia Fernandes and
Reese Balagot, the Sagehens maintained momentum and took the frame 25-19.
The Regals regrouped in the third, with
Emily Ford and Tibesar putting down early kills. Fernandes and Balagot added key swings through the middle of the set to help Cal Lutheran edge ahead 17-13. From there,
Makenna Kawamura took over at the service line, delivering three straight aces to extend the lead. Tibesar added another kill to keep the momentum rolling, and a late block sealed the 25-19 win, putting Cal Lutheran up 2-1 in the match.
In the fourth, both teams traded points early before the Regals pulled away with an 8-1 run, fueled by aces from
Alex Hayes and kills from Tibesar. Later,
Keegan Corley sparked another 8-1 stretch from the service line to keep Cal Lutheran in control. Fernandes closed out the match with the final kill, giving the Regals a 25-14 win and a four-set victory in their regular-season finale.
Tibesar led the team with 13 kills and five blocks, while Balagot added nine kills and Fernandes chipped in seven. Kawamura anchored the offense with 22 assists and 13 digs, and Grimm contributed 18 assists. On defense, Corley tallied a team-high 23 digs along with steady passing that fueled the attack. The Regals also dominated from the service line, led by Kawamura's four aces and Hayes's three.
With the win, Cal Lutheran enters the SCIAC Tournament as the No. 4 seed and will host No. 5 Redlands on Tuesday in the first round, time TBD. The winner plays into top-seeded La Verne on the road Thursday.
