Regals Handle Panthers for Second-Straight Sweep, Ford Tallies 12 Kills

ORANGE, Calif. – Cal Lutheran women's volleyball (17-5, 10-4 SCIAC) traveled to face Chapman (10-13, 5-9 SCIAC) on Tuesday evening, coming away with a clean sweep, 25-23, 25-20, 25-19. Emily Ford led the Regals with 12 efficient kills.

The opening set was tightly contested from start to finish. Cal Lutheran grabbed its first lead of the match after three-straight points, including kills from Aby Tibesar and Kaylee Clayton, to make it 7-6. Ford's second kill gave the Regals a 10-7 lead, then a few errors and a Madeline Magnani kill extended Cal Lutheran's advantage to 15-10. Chapman fought back to make it 21-20 before the teams traded points the rest of the way, resulting in a Cal Lutheran 25-23 set victory on a Kennedy Smith kill.

Set two was filled with runs, as there were six instances of three-straight points from both sides. A Clayton kill and a pair of service aces from Makenna Kawamura led to a 13-8 Regals lead, then kills by Magnani and Smith extended that lead to 18-12. The Panthers made some noise, cutting the deficit to 22-20, but a Clayton kill followed by back-to-back kills from Ford secured the set for Cal Lutheran.

The Regals carried their momentum into set three, taking a 4-0 lead behind two more aces from Kawamura and more kills from Magnani and Clayton. Chapman quickly tied it back up, and both teams went back-and-forth for a while. Cal Lutheran found itself leading 17-14 when Smith took over with three kills in four points, the other point being another Ford kill. The Regals would not squander their advantage, sealing the victory on a Magnani kill, 25-19.

Ford's 12 kills (.455%) paced the Regals. She added two block assists. Smith wasn't far behind with 11 kills while also providing three assists and an ace.

Tibesar continued her strong defensive play up front, notching a solo block and three block assists while adding six kills on the offensive end. Magnani had a similar statline with six kills and two block assists.

Clayton provided six kills, an assist, and 10 digs. Tarin Rueckert played with high efficiency, tallying five kills (.455%) and a block assist.

Kawamura dropped in an impressive five aces while adding 12 assists at setter. She rotated with Kylee Grimm, who led her team with 19 assists. Kawamura totaled nine digs, while Grimm collected six.

Keegan Corley produced a team-high 17 digs, adding seven assists. Corley is now just six digs away from reaching 1,000 in her career. Alexis Holloway notched two digs and one assist.

The Regals will host Whittier in a marquee matchup on Friday night as both teams are competing for the 3-seed in the upcoming SCIAC Tournament. Cal Lutheran sits one game ahead of the Poets right now, and the Regals won the first matchup between the two teams earlier this season in four sets. Cal Lutheran will also be celebrating its seniors with a pregame ceremony. The match will begin at 7pm.
