Regals Take Care of Business, Sweep Occidental

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Cal Lutheran women's volleyball (10-3, 3-2 SCIAC) notched its second consecutive sweep, its seventh this season, defeating Occidental (3-10, 1-4 SCIAC) 3-0 on Tuesday night.

The Tigers came out firing as they quickly got out to a 7-3 lead; a lead they would hold until about three quarters of the way through the set.

Following an Occidental point to give them an 18-16 advantage, the Regals went on a 4-0 run to take a 20-18 lead, but a trio of Tiger points gave them the lead right back.

However, a 5-1 run by the Regals sealed an assertive, back-and-forth 25-19 first-set victory.

The second set got off to a similar start, as multiple lead changes eventually saw the Regals up 12-10 in what was shaping up to be another whirlwind of a set.

However, an 8-0 run from the Regals left no doubt, and Cal Lutheran cruised to a 25-15 second-set victory.

Set three's tone was the same as the first two, one of grit as the two teams engaged in another see-saw of a set.

After Occidental jumped out to a 5-4 lead, a 4-0 run by the Regals put them up 8-5.

The Tigers countered with a run of their own, scoring five unanswered to take a 10-8 lead.

A 6-2 run by the Regals put them up 14-12, and the squads went tit-for-tat over the next handful of points, eventually finding themselves squared up at 17 apiece.

A 6-1 run gave the Regals some breathing room that eventually helped them secure as hard fought a sweep as they will ever play.

Emily Ford and Madeline Magnani each notched double-digit kills, recording 11 and 10 respectively.

The Regals, who are undefeated at home, will look to keep it that way as they host Chapman at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 10.
