Regals Win Fourth Straight to Claim Share of SCIAC Lead

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – Cal Lutheran women's soccer (12-2-1, 8-2-0 SCIAC) hosted Chapman (7-6-3, 4-4-2 SCIAC) on Wednesday evening, claiming its fourth-straight win in a 2-0 victory behind two set-piece goals. With the win, the Regals joined Pomona-Pitzer atop the SCIAC standings at 24 points each with two games to play.

The Regals controlled the game from the jump, managing six shots (three on-goal) in the first 18 minutes before Chapman could muster a shot of its own. However, the Panthers held firm, sending the match into the break without any scores.

Cal Lutheran was able to draw a foul just past midfield in the 61st minute, giving Hana Sawan an opportunity to place a free kick in the box for her teammates. Sawan sent in a towering ball that deflected off a Chapman player's head and into the goal, giving the Regals the lead on Sawan's fourth goal of the year.

In the 82nd minute, Riley Cardenas lined up a corner kick, perfectly placing it to a diving Tessa French who touched it with her right cleat into the back of the net for a 2-0 Cal Lutheran advantage, French's third goal of the season.

Kira Kasarda started in goal for the Regals, as Kelsey Slaugh did not dress due to injury. Kasarda played all 90 minutes in the shutout, her first of 2025, and tallied two saves.

Anna Evenson applied constant pressure all game with a game-high seven shots and three shots-on-goal.

With the win, Cal Lutheran is now tied with Pomona-Pitzer with 24 points in SCIAC play with two games remaining. The Sagehens do hold the head-to-head tiebreaker over the Regals. Cal Lutheran has a chance to clinch a home game in the SCIAC Tournament on Saturday, which it would achieve with a road victory over CMS. Kickoff is at 7pm.
