ORANGE, Calif. – Cal Lutheran men's water polo (9-9, 2-4 SCIAC) traveled to face Chapman (8-14, 3-4 SCIAC) on Wednesday evening, unable to come away with the victory as the Panthers outlasted the Kingsmen 14-12.
Jack Bradbury and
Merrick Giles both recorded hat tricks in the effort.
Bradbury got the scoring started just over a minute into the match, but Chapman responded with five-straight goals to bury the Kingsmen in an early deficit. Giles ended the run with a penalty score just before time ran out in the first quarter to make the score 6-2.
After trading a few goals, Cal Lutheran punched in three consecutive scores by Bradbury,
Alan Castillo, and
Adam Scrivner to cut Chapman's lead to one at 7-6. The Panthers countered with a pair of goals to head into halftime up 9-6.
Chapman opened the third quarter with two more conversions, resulting in a big 11-6 advantage. The Kingsmen attempted to mount a comeback with another three-goal run on the backs of Giles,
Paul Patterson, and
Levi Cook. The Panthers again fought back to extend their lead to 13-9 by the end of the third period.
Giles scored the first goal of the final quarter, then Chapman managed one to keep its lead safe. Cook added another before
Dylan Villanueva got on the board with 18 seconds left, but it wasn't enough as the Kingsmen fell 14-12.
Giles, Patterson, Castillo,
Brody Swarm, and
Ethan Guereca each tallied an assist, and
Bo DuBois spent the entire game in goal, collecting nine saves.
Cal Lutheran will look to get back in the win column on the road at CMS on Saturday morning.
