Suarez’s Last-Second Goal Lifts Cal Lutheran Past La Verne, 2-1

LA VERNE, Calif. — Cal Lutheran women's soccer (11-3-1, 7-2 SCIAC) earned a hard-fought 2-1 road victory over La Verne (1-9-4, 1-5-3 SCIAC) on Saturday night, securing the win with a last-minute goal in the final seconds of regulation.

After a scoreless first half, the Regals broke through in the 70th minute when Hana Sawan placed a penalty shot into the low left corner to give Cal Lutheran a 1-0 lead. Ryan Kaneko drew a foul in the box while weaving through a few Leopard defenders, and Sawan was able to take advantage a few moments later.

La Verne answered in the 82nd minute to level the match at one apiece.

With the match seemingly destined for overtime, Cal Lutheran kept pressing forward and was rewarded in the 89th minute when Olivia Suarez took a pass from Anna Evenson and sent it through the hands of the La Verne goalkeeper, sealing the 2-1 victory.

The Regals controlled the match statistically, outshooting La Verne 23-6 and holding a 17-5 advantage in shots on goal. Cal Lutheran also earned 12 corner kicks to the Leopards' one, maintaining offensive pressure throughout the night. Despite the Regals' dominance, La Verne's keeper tallied 15 saves to keep the contest close.
