LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Cal Lutheran women's soccer (10-3-1, 6-2-0 SCIAC) picked up its sixth road win of the season on Wednesday evening, traveling to Occidental (5-4-2, 4-3-1 SCIAC) and taking the match 1-0.
Olivia Suarez scored her team-leading fifth goal of the year on a beautiful header set up by a free kick from
Hana Sawan in the 52nd minute.
The Regals entered today's match after dropping their previous SCIAC game against Whittier, and they had no trouble righting the ship. A relatively quiet first half saw both teams play conservatively, as Cal Lutheran got off just five shots (2 on-goal) and Occidental mustered two (0 on-goal).
The match was tied heading into the break.
In the 52nd minute,
Anna Evenson drew a foul up the right side of the pitch, allowing the Regals to set up an attack. Sawan placed it perfectly into the crowd, and Suarez elevated and put it in the back of the net with an outstanding header. Suarez's 12th career goal proved to be the game-winner.
The Regals outshot the Tigers 16-7 and 7-0 on-goal. Cal Lutheran goalkeeper
Kelsey Slaugh recorded her fourth shutout of the season (among other scoreless performances) without having to make a single save.
Cal Lutheran will look to stay hot when it travels to La Verne for its fourth-consecutive road game on Saturday night.
