Regals Dominate Banana Slugs in 4-0 Road Victory, Frye Scores First Career Goal

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. – Cal Lutheran women's soccer (9-2-1, 5-2-0 SCIAC) traveled north to face UC Santa Cruz (2-6-1) on Saturday afternoon, routing the Banana Slugs by a score of 4-0. Four different Regals scored in the contest, including Sawyer Frye's first collegiate goal.

The Regals started off aggressively, getting off three shots in the opening 12 minutes, but none of them connected. Early in the 15th minute, some good ball control led to an attack up the right side from Jessica Sprouse. She crossed it into the box to Anna Evenson, who was able to maneuver it past the UC Santa Cruz keeper for the first score of the match and her third goal of the season.

In the 34th minute, defender Hannah Gamez controlled the possession on the Regals' side of the field. She saw an opportunity to push the ball and delivered a strong pass up the middle of the pitch, which found its way through some traffic and at the feet of Frye. Frye looked up to see about 50 yards of grass between her and the goalie, and she pushed forward looking to extend her team's lead. Using a nifty move to gain outside leverage on the Banana Slugs keeper, she sent it into the back of the net off her right foot to score her first goal as a Regal, putting Cal Lutheran up 2-0.

UC Santa Cruz got off its first shot of the match late in the 35th minute, and Regals keeper Kelsey Slaugh picked up a save in the 42nd minute as Cal Lutheran entered the break up 2-0.

Five minutes into the second half, Slaugh held the ball in the Cal Lutheran box before she punted it deep into UC Santa Cruz territory. It took a Regals bounce up the left side, where a streaking Riley Cardenas gave it a left-footed strike past the goalie and into the net to extend Cal Lutheran's lead to 3-0. It was Cardenas' second goal of the season and Slaugh's first assist and point of her career as a collegiate goalkeeper.

Just five minutes later, defender Hana Sawan gained possession and advanced the ball ahead to Sprouse down the middle of the field, who placed it over the Banana Slugs goalie with her left foot to give the Regals a 4-0 lead. Sprouse scored her fourth goal of the year, tying Olivia Suarez for the team lead.

Kira Kasarda relieved Slaugh in goal for the final 22+ minutes of the match, collecting three saves in her appearance.

Cal Lutheran only outshot UC Santa Cruz 11 to 10 (7 to 5 on-goal), but it was able to convert its limited chances into goals while the Banana Slugs could not.

The Regals will continue their outstanding season on Wednesday evening on the road against Occidental.
