COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – After a strong team win over Biola University on Friday evening, Cal Lutheran Men's Water Polo finished 2-3 on the weekend with a victory over Augustana College (IL) in overtime, and losses to Iona University, Air Force, and Navy.
GAME TWO: Kingsmen 10, Vikings 7 OT
Cal Lutheran out-shot Augustana 35-23 in the win on Saturday afternoon.
Alan Castillo led the way with three goals,
Zane Hermann had two, and
Lincoln Hall and
Kayden Sourbeer both added one apiece before the contest went into overtime.
The Kingsmen started off strong in the first period with two Castillo goals in the first three minutes. The Vikings bounced back and added four goals, each from different players, making the game 2-4 going into the second period.
The remainder of the match was of similar nature. Hall, Castillo, and Sourbeer each contributed goals in the second and the Vikings added one, tying it 5-5. The third and fourth periods remained neck and neck, both consisting of only one goal for each team. Both of Cal Lutheran's goals were scored by Hermann.
The game was tied 7-7 going into overtime, but the Kingsmen rallied and secured the win after two goals from
Ethan Guereca and one by
Zachary Isaac.
GAME THREE: Gaels 15, Kingsmen 14
The Saturday night match was a close one for the Kingsmen, falling just short of victory.
Kayden Sourbeer,
Cormac Flanders, and
Lincoln Hall each netted three goals,
Tommy Riffle and
Levi Cook had two apiece, and
Zane Hermann added one. The Gaels just barely out-shot the Kingsmen, 33-30.
Cal Lutheran led the scoring in the first period, quickly responding to each of Iona's three goals. Tied 3-3 with just 14 seconds left, Cook took a shot that put the Kingsmen ahead 4-3 to conclude the period.
The two teams continued to go back and forth through the rest of the match, but the Gaels had the momentum in the second and third periods.
Cal Lutheran was down by four going into the fourth period and started to make a comeback with goals from Riffle and Flanders in the first minute. However, Iona kept applying pressure. The period ended after two final goals from Cook and Hall that were just not enough to take back the match.
GAME FOUR: Falcons 18, Kingsmen 17
Cormac Flanders scored a season-high six goals, but the Kingsmen came up one goal short in a hard-fought 18-17 loss to Air Force.
Flanders led all scorers with his six goals, while
Kayden Sourbeer added a hat trick of his own.
Lincoln Hall contributed two goals, and
Levi Cook and
Paul Patterson each added one.
The Kingsmen started strong in the first period, responding quickly to two early Falcons goals. Flanders and Sourbeer both scored within a minute to tie the game at 2-2. After taking a 4-3 lead at the end of the first, the Kingsmen battled back and forth, trading goals throughout the second period. At halftime, the Kingsmen trailed 9-8.
The third period saw the Falcons pull ahead with a series of goals, but the Kingsmen stayed close thanks to a strike from
Tommy Riffle.
Entering the fourth down by two, the Kingsmen made a valiant comeback attempt, scoring seven goals in the final period, including two from
Lincoln Hall. Flanders scored the last goal of the game with 1:14 left, but the Kingsmen couldn't find the equalizer in the final minute.
GAME FIVE: Midshipmen 24, Kingsmen 16
The Kingsmen concluded their trip to Colorado with a defeat to USNA.
The Midshipmen jumped on top quickly with 3-0 lead and continued to stay ahead despite Cal Lutheran's efforts. The Kingsmen were able to keep the margin within one point multiple times, however, two last minute goals from Navy put the Midshipmen ahead 7-4 at the end of the first period.
In the second quarter, Navy quickly extended their lead by five. The Kingsmen kept putting up a fight but were not able to catch up by halftime. At the end of the second, the Midshipmen led 14-9. The two teams went back and forth throughout the last two quarters. The Kingsmen were only down by one in the fourth period scoring but remained far behind Navy, dropping the match 16-24.
Cal Lutheran returns home for their next match ups with UC Santa Barbara and Westcliff University. They are set to host the two games on Saturday, September 28th at 9:00 AM and 1:00 PM.
