THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – Cal Lutheran's Women's Volleyball got their momentum back this past weekend, hosting the 15th annual Cal Lu Fornia Invitational Tournament. The invitational featured multiple top 25 Division III teams this year, and the Regals walked away with a 2-1 finish. The team dropped game one to No. 17 East Texas Baptist University 3-1 on Friday night, before taking games two and three from UC Santa Cruz (3-0) and Puget Sound (3-2) on Saturday.
Cal Lutheran vs. No. 17 East Texas Baptist University – 25-16, 25-11, 25-27, 25-22
CLU started off their home tournament with a tough battle on Friday, taking a set from the nationally ranked Tigers.
Kira Mortensen led the Regals with 15 kills and four blocks, while
Tess Holbert collected 30 assists. Cal Lutheran also saw 19 digs from
Keegan Corley and two aces from
Chloe Blue.
Cal Lutheran vs. UC Santa Cruz – 28-26, 25-16, 25-20
The Regals found themselves back in the win column on Saturday afternoon with a three set sweep over UCSC. Sohpia Muller led the way with 11 kills, Mortensen had nine blocks, and Holbert provided 21 assists in the match. The 25-16 second set featured a nine point streak for the Regals, with kills from
Tarin Rueckert, Mortensen, and Muller, and six attack errors from the Banana Slugs.
Cal Lutheran vs. Puget Sound – 25-19, 20-25, 20-25, 25-17, 16-14
The last game of the tournament was an absolute thriller that ended in favor of Cal Lutheran.
Kennedy Smith had a career high 16 kills in the nightcap, while Holbert had a whopping 44 assists and Corley managed 22 digs. After a kill each from Mortensen and Smith, the final set of the game ended on a service ace from
Emily Ford.
The Regals are back on the court for a home exhibition game against Life Pacific on Thursday, September 19th, before starting SCIAC play on September 27th.
