LA VERNE, Calif. — Despite Luke Wechsler's stellar performance through eight innings, Cal Lutheran baseball fell to La Verne in game one of the SCIAC tournament, as the Leopards rallied for three runs in the ninth to snatch the victory Thursday afternoon.
Now 0-1 in the double-elimination tournament, the Kingsmen's (28-13, 15-9 SCIAC) task gets taller as they try to defend back-to-back SCIAC tournament championships.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Kingsmen entered the bottom of the ninth inning up 4-2 on the Leopards (27-11-1, 18-6 SCIAC) after Wechsler pitched eight innings of two-run ball, striking out five batters without allowing a walk, and getting the Kingsmen out of jams time after time. Wechsler took the mound to begin the ninth but the Leopards struck quickly with just three outs remaining, tallying back-to-back singles. Wechsler's day was done as Joshua Kim entered the ballgame with the tying run on first base. Ethan Dungo caught a lazy fly ball for the inning's first out, then a costly infield error allowed the Leopard's runner on second base to score while putting the tying run on third and the winning run on second. With one out and the scoreboard reading 4-3, a hit by pitch with the bases loaded brought a run home to tie the game at 4-4, and a sacrifice fly ended the game, as the Leopards walked off to complete the comeback.
The Kingsmen led 4-0 at one point after a four spot in the sixth broke a five-inning scoreless tie. After Blake Wink and Kai Caranto started the sixth off with back-to-back singles, Lucas Danielewicz hit a grounder to second base that looked like a potential double play for the Leopards. Still, two throwing errors in one play allowed both Wink and Caranto to score with Danielewicz ending up at third base. Troy Anderson made them pay the next batter, smashing a two-run opposite field home run up and over the right field wall, his sixth big fly of the season.
