LOS ANGELES — Casey Edwards pitched a complete game in game one and Ally Forbell threw 5.1 innings of shutout ball in game two as Cal Lutheran softball won both games of its doubleheader against Occidental, securing the series sweep on Tuesday afternoon.
The Regals (6-7, 3-0 SCIAC) pitching staff shined in the series, holding the Tigers to just one run through three games as they jumped out to an early lead in the SCIAC standings thanks to the sweep.
GAME ONE: Regals 4, Tigers 1
Edwards (W) pitched a gem in the Regals' victory, allowing one run in 7.0 innings for her first complete game of the season after leading the pitching staff in CGs in 2023 with 17.
The Regals got on the board with a two-out rally in the third inning and capitalized on defensive miscues by the Tigers in the late innings to take the lead.
Ahlyssa Guzman singled to keep the Regals' half of the third inning alive and stole second to get into scoring position, her first stolen bag of the year. Then, Nadia Collins drove in Guzman with an RBI single to make it 1-1, her second hit of the game.
After Edwards retired the Tigers in order in the fourth and fifth innings, the Regals took the lead in the sixth by putting pressure on the Tiger defense. With Olivia Vargas on base, Hanna Booth doubled to put runners on second and third. Vargas scored off of a throwing error by the Tigers and Booth followed suit next, scoring on a wild pitch.
Collins' RBI groundout in the seventh inning gave the Regals some insurance and Edwards provided another one-two-three inning in the last frame to close out the victory.
THE NUMBERS
- Edwards (1-3): 7.0 IP, 6 H, 1 ER, 6 K
- Booth: 1-2, BB, 2B, R
- Collins: 2-4, 2 RBI, SB
- Abby Strong: 1-2, 2B, R
GAME TWO: Regals 1, Tigers 0
One run in the third inning was all the Regals needed, as Forbell (W) was dominant through 5.1 innings of work, only allowing three hits and walking two while striking out three. Ashlyn Flinchum pitched 1.2 innings in relief for a five-out save.
Just like in game one, the Regals did damage with two outs in the top of the third inning. Collins reached on an infield single and stole second for her team-high fifth stolen base in as many attempts. First-year Reyna Perez doubled to drive in Collins and record her first collegiate RBI; her knock proved to be the difference maker as neither team pushed across any more runs in the contest.
THE NUMBERS
- Forbell (1-0): 5.1 IP, 3 H, 2 BB, 0 ER, 3 K
- Flinchum (S, 1): 1.2 IP, 2 BB, 0 ER, K
- Perez: 1-3, 2B, RBI
- Collins: 1-3, R, SB
