LOS ANGELES — Cal Lutheran women's water polo defeated UC Merced 9-3 but fell to Fresno Pacific 13-8 at the Convergence Tournament on Saturday.
The Regals went 3-1 at the tournament and are now 4-12 on the year.
Game One: Cal Lutheran 9, UC Merced 3
Bethany Metcalfe led the way with four goals and Jacsen Donohue dished out four assists. The defense was dominant as Izzy De Souza and Reyna Clark had three steals. De Souza made nine saves.
The first half remained close as the Regals were up 4-2 at the end of the first quarter and 5-3 at the half. They shut out the Bobcats in the second half and cruised to the win.
Game Two: Cal Lutheran 8, Fresno Pacific 13
Donohue had a team-high four goals and Metcalfe was next with three. Vianne Will recorded six saves and three steals.
The Regals and Sunbirds were neck and neck in the first quarter as the Regals trailed 3-2. The Sunbirds shut out the Regals in the second quarter and had a 6-2 lead at the half. The Regals outscored the Sunbirds 4-3 in the third but it wasn't enough as the Sunbirds took control in the fourth and won the game.
The Regals start conference play next Saturday. They host La Verne on March 9th at 11 am.
