(THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — Jan. 15, 2023) Cal Lutheran women's basketball are SCIAC Regular Season Co-Champions! Five Regals broke double-figure scoring as the team celebrated Senior Day with a 78-76 win against Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday evening.
The Regals celebrated their seniors before the game, honoring Grace Godines and Aliya DiMuro. They finished the year with a record of 18-6 and 13-3 in conference and are SCIAC champions for the first time since the 2012-2013 season. With the win tonight, the Regals also finished the season undefeated at home with an 11-0 record at Gilbert Arena.
Alline Ballard posted a 15-point and 11-rebound double-double, her 14th of the season. Sara Mills and Janna Holley both had 12 points, Kaiya Mack added 11, and DiMuro added 10.
The Regals led by four points with a minute remaining, but the Sagehens knocked down a three to make it 73-72. With just 30 seconds left in the contest, DiMuro scored underneath the basket and Holley, who assisted on DiMuro's bucket, was fouled off the ball at the same time. The Regals were in the double-bonus and Holley was awarded two free throws; she converted to execute a huge four-point play, making it 77-72 and the defense did the rest.
Earlier in the game, Alexa Greenwood knocked down a three at the two-minute mark of the first quarter to extend the Regal lead to nine, 21-12. In the second quarter, the Sagehens (5-20, 2-14 SCIAC) cut the Regals' lead to four points, 33-29. Mills dished out an assist to Ballard at the buzzer to cap off a 13-3 Regal run to re-establish a marginal 14-point lead at halftime.
The Regals held their double-digit-point lead until the end of the third quarter when the Sagehens went on a 10-1 run to make it 60-55 Regals going into the fourth quarter.
After a successful regular season, the Regals look ahead to the playoffs. They will host the SCIAC Tournament Semifinals at Gilbert Arena, where they look to remain undefeated, on Thursday, Feb. 22 at 7 p.m.
