Box Score LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Anna Evenson (2), Olivia Suarez (3), and Alyssa Moran (1) all scored to lift Cal Lutheran women's soccer to a 3-2 win over Occidental on Wednesday evening.
With the score knotted up at 1-1 in the second half, Suarez and Moran scored back-to-back goals to put the Regals (6-0-3, 4-0 SCIAC) on top.
In the 64th minute, the Regals caught the Tiger defense off-guard, turning a free kick in their own territory into a furious offensive attack. A cutting Suarez found herself in the perfect position to tap in a redirected shot to make it 2-1, her team-leading third goal of the season.
Moran made it two Regals goals in a row in a similar fashion 10 minutes later. A Regals free kick created the scoring chance and Moran found the back of the net from a rebounded shot.
Moran's insurance goal proved to be the game-winner as the Tigers (0-6-1, 0-5 SCIAC) were able to get within one with a goal in the 79th minute. The Tigers went for broke with nothing to lose and came close a handful of times down the stretch, but goalkeeper Kelsey Slaugh and the rest of the defense held on for the 3-2 win.
Despite creating numerous scoring chances and dominating time of possession, the Regals and Tigers played even after 45 minutes. Evenson scored a banger first goal of the match in the 16th minute. Evenson dribbled to her right and let a shot go from distance, tucking it perfectly in the top right corner to get it past the diving Tigers goalie.
In the first half, the Regals earned five corners and outshot the Tigers 11-3, but a Regals handball in the box gifted the Tigers a penalty shot in the 39th minute that they converted. The only shot on goal for the Tigers made it 1-1 going into the break.
In the match, The Regals outshot the Tigers 27-8 and took 11 corners while allowing none.
An overall dominant performance kept the Regals in sole possession of first place in the SCIAC. They look to keep rolling as they return to Thousand Oaks to take on Caltech at home on Saturday, Oct. 5 at 7 p.m.
