Box Score REDLANDS, Calif. – Avery West's (1) goal was the match's defining moment in No. 14 Cal Lutheran women's soccer's 1-0 win against Redlands on Saturday afternoon. The Regals (9-0-4) continued to roll through the SCIAC, beating the Bulldogs (6-6-1, 2-5-0 SCIAC) to improve to 7-0 against conference foes.
West, a 2023 First Team All-West Region selection and reigning SCIAC Defensive Athlete of the Year, scored her first goal of the season in the 37th minute. Her lone goal was all the fuel the Regals needed as they dominated possession and gave the Bulldogs almost no chances.
The Regals outshot the Bulldogs 16-5 and earned eight corners. The defensive corps didn't let any of the Bulldogs' five shots on goal, giving goalkeeper Kelsey Slaugh an easy day at the office.
West was the only Regal to play 90 minutes, as head coach Frank Marino called on 16 different players to see the pitch. The Regals have allowed just six goals this season and have won six out of their last seven matches outright with one draw during that stretch.
Next, the Regals put their undefeated season on the line in a match that would produce the biggest win of the season for the victor. They host Pomona-Pitzer, the last team to hand the Regals a loss.
The two teams matched up three times last season with each contest ending with a different outcome. The Regals hosted the Sagehens in their first matchup of the 2023 season and both teams netted penalty kick goals in a 1-1 draw. The next time they met, the Sagehens would prevail 1-0 with the SCIAC Tournament Championship on the line. Their saga came to a close with the Regals having the last laugh, beating the Sagehens 1-0 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament during the Regals' miracle championship run last November.
The Regals look to take the first of their two matchups against the Sagehens and kick off the rivalry's 2024 chapter purple and gold. Show out to William Rolland Stadium on Wednesday, Oct. 16 at 7 p.m. for this marquee matchup.
