Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Regals Fall to Panthers on the Road

ORANGE, Calif. — Cal Lutheran women's basketball had their six-game winning streak snapped as the Regals fell to Chapman 82-64 on Saturday evening.

With the result, the Regals (13-5, 8-2 SCIAC) split the season series with the Panthers (10-8, 4-7 SCIAC). The Regals are now tied with Whittier for first place in the conference.

Two Regals broke double-figure scoring with Janna Holley recording 21 points and three steals while Kaiya Mack added 14 points. Alline Ballard grabbed 13 rebounds, marking her fifth straight game with double-digit boards.

The Regals couldn't find their offensive groove, shooting just 31.5% from the field and going 2-16 from three-point range in the contest.

The Panthers' success at the charity stripe was one of the deciding factors. They only made one more field goal than the Regals but got to the free-throw line 33 times and shot 87.9% (29-33) from the charity stripe.

The Regals battled in the first half to keep it close despite their shooting woes. At one point, the Panthers led by 10 thanks to an 11-2 run, but the Regals answered right back with an 8-0 run of their own. The Panthers had a slight edge at halftime, 31-29.

After a closely-contested beginning of the third quarter, the Panthers went on a 16-4 run that included nine free throws on 10 attempts to put them up 54-44 going into the fourth quarter.

The Panthers only continued to pile on in the fourth quarter, extending their lead to 19 at one point. The Regals cut the deficit to 10 points, but with only a minute to play, they came up short of a comeback.

The Regals look to bounce back when they go on the road to take on La Verne (12-5, 8-3 SCIAC) on Wednesday, Jan. 31 at 7 p.m.
