Game Recap: Men's Volleyball |

No. 12 Kingsmen Defeat No. 6 Vassar, Adrian to Start Season 3-0

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — No. 12 Cal Lutheran men's volleyball defeated No. 6 Vassar 3-1 and Adrian 3-0 on Saturday afternoon. 

The Kingsmen swept Adrian 25-12, 25-16, 25-14 and then took down Vassar 25-23, 25-22, 23-25, 25-22 to start the season 3-0. The Kingsmen also defeated No. 14 UC Santa Cruz to start the year. 

In their first match of the day, the Kingmen defeated Adrian in one hour and seven minutes. It was their second straight sweep to open the season and they impressed with a team-hitting percentage of .424. 

The offense came from all over the court as 10 Kingsmen recorded a kill. Jordan Cooper led the way with eight, Ben Weber was next with seven, and Borys Horiuk and Michael Stahl had five. Taylor Marks kept the offense moving with 19 assists, Parker Brown and T. Marks had three aces and Weber had eight digs. 

With the Kingsmen up 8-6 in the first set, they used an 8-0 run to coast through the rest of the set. The runs continued in the second set. Down 5-4, a four-point run put the Kingsmen up. They never looked back and had their eye on the sweep. With set three tied at 4-4, a 6-0 run had the Kingsmen in business. They never looked back and swept the Bulldogs. 

Against Vassar, Cooper led the way with 20 kills while hitting with a .317 percentage. Stahl was next with 14 kills, Horiuk had seven kills, Weber added six, and Noah Rigo had five. T. Marks had 47 assists to keep the ball moving, Logan Marks had 10 digs to protect the backline, and Rigo had three total blocks. 

The Kingsmen won the first two sets while the Brewers bounced back and took the third. The Kingsmen faced adversity in the fourth and down 9-8 scored four straight points to take the lead. The run was capped off by three straight blocks by Rigo and Stahl, Cooper and Rigo, and a solo block by Cooper.  With the score later tied at 19-19, another four-point run gave the Kingsmen the lead for good. They held off the Brewers and picked up the hard-fought win. 

The Kingsmen continue the season with another tough test. They are at Division I CSUN on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
