THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — Cal Lutheran women's volleyball nearly pulled off a huge upset of No. 6 Trinity (Tex.) on day one of the East West Classic. In their second match of the day, the Regals were swept by No. 12 Emory.
"I am proud of the effort of our young group against some of the most well-coached teams in the nation," said head coach
Kellee Roesel. "I felt as if our serving and back row defense kept us in these matches today. This team continues to improve, and regardless of the score they play with a tremendous amount of love for each other and the game. All of the coaches are excited about the future of this program."
Cal Lutheran 2, No. 6 Trinity (Tex.) 3 – 26-24, 19-25, 25-22, 19-25, 12-15
The Regals put the No. 6 team to the test and had them on the ropes from the very beginning as they took the first set. The match would go back and forth as the Regals and Tigers were locked into a tight battle. The Regals would go to their third five-set match and almost pulled off the upset.
Tarin Rueckert led the attack with 20 kills and
Amy Buffini had 16. The duo recorded a double-double as Buffini had 23 digs and Rueckert had 15.
Tess Holbert made it three Regals with a double-double as she had 37 assists and 16 digs.
Cal Lutheran 0, No. 12 Emory 3 – 14-25, 13-25, 15-25
Eight different Regals recorded a kill as
Sadie Peete had the most with five. Buffini and
Alex Hayes were next with four each. Holbert dished out 13 assists,
Keegan Corley had 11 digs, and
Kira Mortensen and
Caitlin Murphy had two block assists each.
The Regals look to bounce back on Saturday as they take on another tough opponent. Cal Lutheran will play No. 14 Washington (Mo.) at 11:30 a.m.
