Regals Open SCIAC Play with Win at Redlands; Three Notch a Double-Double

REDLANDS, Calif. — Cal Lutheran women's volleyball started Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) play with a win as they swept Redlands on Tuesday night. The scores of the match were 25-23, 25-18, 25-….

The Regals opened the season at three tournaments with many ranked teams. The tough competition helped prepare them for a SCIAC championship race. The Regals had a double-double as the team improved to 1-0 in conference and 3-8 overall. It is their second straight sweep.

"I am proud of the effort and progress of this group," said head coach Kellee Roesel. "I thought being able to close out the first set was crucial. Our defense was disciplined and stuck with the game plan. Tess Holbert set a balanced match as our first contact got better throughout the match.

Sadie Peete recorded her fourth double-double of the year. She led the team in kills and digs with 14 and 12, respectively.

Amy Buffini continued to step up for the Regals. She tallied her fourth double-double, and third straight, with 11  kills and 13 digs.

Tess Holbert made it three Regals with a double-double. At the setter, she moved the ball around with 39 assists. She added 12 digs for her fourth double-double of the year.

Kira Mortensen was all over the court with six kills, three digs, and two blocks. Caitlin Murphy and Tarin Reuckert added five kills each, Murphy had nine digs, and Reuckert added three blocks.

The Bulldogs kept the first set close as the Regals responded to every threat. With Redlands up 12-9, Cal Lutheran went on an 8-2 run and had their biggest lead of the set. The Bulldogs returned the favor and went up 23-21, forcing a timeout.  Coming out of the timeout, the Regals scored four straight points and won the game. Reuckert had a kill, Peete served an ace, and Redlands committed two errors.

The Regals turned it up a notch in the second and third sets. With the second set tied at 10, the Regals went on a 4-1 run and never looked back. Up 4-3 in the third, they used a 7-3 run and went up 11-6, capped off by a Murphy kill. The Regals continued to cruise and won the match.

The Regals continue the season on Friday. They look to make it three straight wins and are at La Verne on Friday at 7 p.m.
