Kingsmen Cut Down Loggers with Stifling Defense

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — Cal Lutheran men's basketball had a stifling defense as they dominated Puget Sound 82-53 on Saturday afternoon.

"The offense was a little inconsistent but the defense was very steady," head coach Russell White said. "Nice win against a top team from the NWC to help us get ready for the East Coast trip."

After allowing just 61 points to North Central in their season opener, the Kingsmen followed it up with just 53 against the Loggers. The defense held the Loggers to just 1-14 from three for 7.1 percent. Puget Sound was also 37.3 from the field while the Kingsmen were 50.0 from the field and 39.3 from three.

Brock Susko led the way for the Kingsmen, hitting four three-pointers. He totaled 16 points to go along with four rebounds. Devon Lewis was next with 13 points, Patrick Renane hit both his three-pointers and had 12, and Nick Annanasio added nine more.

The Kingsmen moved the ball well and recorded 18 assists. Griffitts, Lewis, and Desi Burrage dished out four each. Griffitts was big on the boards with seven rebounds and Renane added six more.

The Kingsmen controlled the fast break and outscored Puget Sound from the bench. The Kingsmen won the fast break advantage 20-5 and the bench points 39-19.

The Kingsmen jumped out to 1 16-6 lead as Miles Griffin drilled a three-pointer with the assist to Burrage. They kept the points coming as Lewis made two free throws to make it 28-12 with 6:39 left in the half. The Kingsmen cruised into halftime with a 35-19 advantage. The Loggers tried to fight back in the second half but the Kingsmen's defense never let them get within 10 points.

After starting the season with two games at home, the Kingsmen hit the road for five games. They travel to the East Coast and take on Randolph-Macon in Ashland, Va., on Nov. 19th at 3:30 p.m. PST.
