CLAREMONT, Calif — Cal Lutheran men's water polo traveled to take on Pomona-Pitzer, where they fell 15-9 on Saturday.
"We started off slow today, went down early, and couldn't quite catch back up," said head coach
John Jacobson. "The squad hung tough, never stopped playing, and gave good effort throughout the game. If we can improve on defense, this team has the potential to do great things."
Kayden Sourbeer led the Kingsmen in scoring with three goals.
Adam Dow and
Bryan Lynch each scored twice.
Luke Matthies and
Jack Bradbury both contributed a goal as well. Bo Dubois was in goal and recorded nine saves.
Bradbury put his team in power play positions with four drawn ejections. DuBois led the Kingsmen with four steals.
The Sagehens started the game by striking fast and often, scoring five unanswered goals in the first five minutes of the match. The Kingsmen netted two goals but allowed one more before the end of the first quarter where Pomona-Pitzer led 6-2. Cal Lutheran was held scoreless in the second quarter while PP found the net three more times to wrap up a half where the Sagehens took a 9-2 lead.
Pomona-Pitzer outscored Cal Lutheran 5-2 in the third quarter to stretch their lead to 14-4. The Kingsmen went on a 5-1 run over the fourth quarter, but the offense found its groove just late.
Cal Lutheran falls to 4-11 on the season and 2-2 in conference while Pomona-Pitzer improves to 4-12 and 2-1 in conference. The Kingsmen continue conference play when they host Occidental on Wednesday, October 11 at 4 p.m.
