CLAREMONT, Calif. —
Avery West and
Isabella Veljacic led a furious second-half rally as Cal Lutheran women's soccer stayed undefeated with a 2-2 draw to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Wednesday night.
Two consecutive goals by West and Veljacic, midway through the second half, seven minutes apart, improved the Regals to 13-0-4 overall and 8-0-3 in SCIAC.
"I was pleased with our response in the second half after digging ourselves a 0-2 hole," head coach
Frank Marino said. "We showed a lot of grit in the second half and I am happy to come away with the result."
The Athenas struck twice in the first half, scoring in the 38th and 41st minute to go ahead 2-0. This was the first time the Regals have conceded two goals all season.
In the second half, West would score thanks to an assist by
Ally Fisicaro to cut the deficit in half to 2-1. With momentum back on their side,
Eden Quiroz and West connected for two perfect passes that set up Veljacic for the finish, tying up the match at 2-2 in the 76th minute.
Neither team would find the goal in the time remaining, resulting in the Regals' fourth tie and the Athenas' third. Goalkeeper
Logan Duford recorded four saves in the effort to keep CMS off the board in the second half.
With the result, Cal Lutheran's record now stands at 13-0-4 (8-0-3 SCIAC) while Claremont-Mudd-Scripps moves to 6-6-3 (4-4-2 SCIAC). The Regals will conclude their season at home for Senior Day against Chapman on Saturday, October 28 at 1:30 p.m.
