Regals Off To Best Start in Program History

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif — Program history was made for Cal Lutheran women's soccer! The Regals are off to their best start with a record of 11-0-3 as they defeated UC Santa Cruz 2-0 on Sunday afternoon.

A goal from Isabella Veljacic and a penalty kick by Ashley Escamilla pushed the 2023 squad past the 2010 team that went 12-1-1 through 14 games.

"Another strong result in our non-conference game today," head coach Frank Marino said. "Incredibly proud of this group for having the best start in program history. That is an incredible honor with our program's great history."

The Regals wasted no time, as Veljacic scored in just the third minute with an assist from Adriana Maroney. They would strike again later in the first half after a Banana Slug handball gave the Regals a penalty kick in the 41st minute. Escamilla buried it into the bottom-right corner to extend the lead to 2-0.

Cal Lutheran's defense did the job throughout the final 45 minutes, limiting UC Santa Cruz's chances and keeping them off the board until the final horn. In goal, Kelsey Slaugh made five saves in an impressive performance.

The Regals remain undefeated as they improve to 11-0-3, while the Banana Slugs fall to 8-3-2. Cal Lutheran resumes conference play with an away game at Occidental on Wednesday, October 18th at 7 p.m.
