Kingsmen Battle at Naval Academy Tournament

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Cal Lutheran men's water polo team closed out the Naval Academy Tournament Sunday morning against Johns Hopkins and Salem International in Lejeune Hall. The Kingsmen fell to Johns Hopkins 13-7 and came up short against Salem International 10-9 in double overtime.

With 11 goals on the weekend, senior Chris Gardhouse has now scored 114 for his career. He is now tied for fifth all-time at CLU. Senior Nick Loomis tallied 35 saves on the weekend and now has 533 which is the second-most in CLU history. He trails Quinten Beckmann who had 654 saves from 2004-07.

Johns Hopkins 13, CLU 7

Against the Blue Jays of Johns Hopkins, the game started out fairly even. The Blue Jays had a 4-3 lead after the first quarter and were up 6-4 at the half. Johns Hopkins opened up the game in the third quarter outscoring the Kingsmen 4-1. The Blue Jays went on to win the game 13-7.

Cal Lutheran's Gardhouse scored three goals for the third straight game. The second-leading scorer for the Kingsmen was Taggart Diehl who connected on two of his shots. Davy Thomas and George Lundgren each added a goal of their own. Lundgren led the team with two assists. Jake Venckus was back in the goal and made 10 saves.

Salem International 10, CLU 9 (2OT)

In a highly competitive contest, that saw the score go back and forth, it was the Salem International Tigers that had the final say.

Cal Lutheran had the early advantage and led 4-2 at the end of the first. The Tigers outscored the Kingsmen 5-1 in the second and took the lead. CLU tied the game at eight in the third. Each team scored once in the fourth and the game was tied at nine. Salem's Marino Chorro scored the game-winner in double overtime and the Tigers won 10-9.

The Kingsmen were led by George French who scored three goals. Gardhouse was right behind him and added two goals. Andre Rivas, Mats Albins, Loomis and Diehl each added a goal. Loomis was in goal for CLU and had 21 saves.

Cal Lutheran returns home to continue the season. The Kingsmen will face Air Force Academy (Colo.) and Cuesta College, Sept. 15, at 1 and 5 p.m., respectively.
