Regals Convert on PK to Win 1-0 Against Leopards

Box Score

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – Cal Lutheran's Joss Pereda connected on a penalty kick as the Regals knocked off the La Verne Leopards 1-0 Wednesday night at William Rolland Stadium.

The Regals and Leopards were the only two undefeated teams left in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) coming into tonight's game. With the win, CLU improved to 4-0-1 in conference and 6-1-1 overall.

The first half proved to be very defensive as neither team could convert on their goal scoring opportunities. Cal Lutheran had six shots while La Verne could only muster two.

In the second half, La Verne got called for a handball in its own goalie box which gave the Regals a penalty kick. Pereda scored her first goal of the season in the 68th minute as she placed the ball to the left side of the goal.

The Regals would have more chances to score, but couldn't make it happen. CLU took 13 shots in the second half and La Verne took four. Kali Youngdahl led Cal Lutheran with five shots while Bri Pinal and Alexandra Albaeck took three shots each.

CLU recorded its third shutout of the season. Gabby Flores improved to 2-1 and had two saves. The defense kept La Verne to only two shots on the goal as Olivia Leyva, Riley Martin, Trinity Martinez and Katie Weaver held the Leopards in check.

The Regals continue the season at home and host Pomona-Pitzer Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at William Rolland Stadium in Thousand Oaks, Calif.
