IRVINE, Calif. - Competing against NCAA Division II program Concordia Irvine without its top two singles players, the Cal Lutheran women's tennis team dropped its season opener 9-0 to the Eagles on Saturday afternoon.
With No. 1 Gianna Cupo and No. 2 Sarah Seeman sidelined due to injuries, the Regals were at a disadvantage with just five active players available.
The pairing of Emily Werman and Annette Sousa fought valiantly at No. 2 doubles, eventually falling 8-6, while Shelby Kubota and Christie Kurdys dropped an 8-4 decision at No. 1 doubles. Without enough able bodies, CLU was forced to forfeit No. 3 doubles as well as No. 6 singles.
In singles action, the Eagles sent the Regals down in straight sets in every match. Kurdys put up the toughest fight at No. 2, falling 7-5, 6-1.
Cal Lutheran (0-1) kicks off Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) action with its next match on Friday, Feb. 17 at 3:00 p.m. at Caltech.
