Regals Blanked in SCIAC Opener

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) opener for the Cal Lutheran women's tennis team was a tough challenge as the Regals faced the six-time defending league champion Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Athenas on the road, falling 7-0.

Heavy rains in the area over the last two days forced a one-hour delay of the first serve today and though the teams were able to get the match in, the players at No. 1 and 2 singles, did not finish while another CLU player retired in the first game on court No. 4.

Once competition got underway, the Athenas swept past the Regals in doubles play as CLU was unable to post a single point on any of the three courts.

Singles play followed with similar results. At No. 3, Annette Sousa battled to a 6-3, 6-1 loss while the Regals, Emily Werman and Christie Kurdys, in the two matches that did not finish both challenged. Werman worked her way to a 6-4 final in the first game and was trailing 3-0 when players were called off the courts. At No. 2, Kurdys fell 6-2 and was down 5-0 at the time the match went final.

Cal Lutheran (0-2, 0-1 SCIAC) returns to action on Thursday, Feb. 23 at 4:00 p.m. against Brandeis (Mass.) at the Poulson Tennis Center.
