THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - The No. 4 Cal Lutheran women's volleyball team put another Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) game in the books on Tuesday night with a 3-1 (25-22, 21-25, 25-10, 25-21) win over the Occidental Tigers inside Gilbert Arena.
The Regals began the first set on top by putting the first points on the board. They went up 5-1 before the Tigers were able to come back and tie it at five all. The Regals followed with a four-point scoring run to put the score at 9-5 and were able to hold the lead from the Tigers. Molly Holloway helped the Regals with five points from behind the back line. Occidental was able to make it close at the end but CLU pulled it out 25-22.
The second set was much closer with the Regals taking the lead to start but the Tigers began to close in and took the lead at 13-10. Occidental did not let up and neither did the Regals. CLU scored seven points to Occidental's 10 points putting the score at 23-17, Tigers. The Regals came back and scored four more points before Occidental ultimately scored the two set securing points ending at 25-21.
Amanda Roberts started off behind the back line for the Regals and helped serve up six points in a row before the Tigers could score one to start the third. The Regals dominated and only allowed nine more points to drop on their side of the court before ending the game at 25-10. Nicki Tetherow and Hope Stewart helped the Regals score four and six points, respectively, while serving and only giving up one point to the Tigers between them.
The fourth set was exciting from the beginning with the Regals and Tigers trading points back and forth until CLU had a six-point scoring run to put the score at 14-9. The Regals continued to push the Tigers back and put up five more points to solidify their lead, 19-12. The Tigers would not stop fighting and came back and scored nine points intermittently but the Regals stayed ahead and pulled the set out 25-21.
14 Regals helped out on the court in the four set win. Stewart lead the way with 13 kills, nine digs and a .300 hitting percentage. Roberts tallied a double-double with 11 kills and 10 digs overall. Sarah Pappas and Monica Lundgren followed next with nine and seven kills, respectively, while Pappas also hit .412. Steph Rolfson started her first set of the season and came away with two kills and 19 assists. Jamie Smith and Mikayla Dobson also had 12 and 10 assists, individually. Tetherow brought up the defense by digging 20 shots from Occidental. The Regals also accumulated 12 services aces between five players.
Cal Lutheran (13-3, 4-1 SCIAC) looks to add to their number in the win column as they will travel to La Verne on Sept. 30 at 7:00 p.m., to play the Leopards (9-4, 3-2 SCIAC) in another strong SCIAC matchup.
