THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - On an afternoon where temperatures reached triple digits the Cal Lutheran women's soccer team braved the heat to take on UC Santa Cruz. The game went scoreless until the Regals found the back of the net in the 98th minute when Bri Pinal played the ball into the middle and Ryley Settles fired a shot above the outstretched hand of the goalkeeper to give the Regals the 1-0 victory inside Rolland Stadium.
It was a quiet first half for both teams. Cal Lutheran finished the half with three shots on target while UC Santa Cruz had two. The second half offered opportunities for both sides yet neither team could fully capitalize before the opposing defense swarmed to stop any offensive threats.
As the heat subsided the two teams continued to battle in the first period of overtime, until the match-ending goal from Settles. Cal Lutheran finished with 13 shots total, seven of them on goal, while UC Santa Cruz tallied 12 total and four on target. Shots on target came from Settles, Katelyn Kimball, Kali Youngdahl, and Maddy Griess, while Bri Pinal and Jordan Miller each had two apiece.
Making their debut for the Regals tonight were Julia Locke, Tristan Jackson, and Mia Fernandez. This match marks the team's fifth shutout on the year with this one coming from a combined goalkeeping effort from Fernandez and Stacy Choate-Ciletti.
