THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - The Cal Lutheran women's volleyball team hosted the Cal Lu Fornia Invitational this weekend, where the Regals were able to come out undefeated in all four contests defeating Puget Sound (Wash.), No. 20 Wisconsin-Whitewater, East Texas Baptist and No. 6 Emory all by the score of 3-0.
CLU def. Puget Sound (Wash.) 3-0 (25-12, 25-16, 25-13)
The Regals were able to put away Puget Sound quickly and quietly to begin their tournament play. Hope Stewart and Sarah Pappas helped direct the Regals to a win by acquiring the same number of kills at 11 and just missed sharing the same number of points at 12.5 and 12, respectively. Pappas finished the second set with five of the last six points scored in a row for the Regals win. Monica Lundgren fired off 10 kills herself to go along with an outstanding .714 hitting percentage. Hannah Nua came on in the last set for the Regals and picked up one kill and one dig. Nicki Tetherow led her team on defense with 25 digs while Jamie Smith put up 40 assists on the offensive.
CLU def. No. 20 Wisconsin-Whitewater 3-0 (25-11, 25-14, 25-18)
Cal Lutheran was able to fend off their ranked opponent with a clean sweep. The first set the Regals pulled away in the beginning with a 6-0 run followed by a 4-0 run to put the score at 20-7 CLU. The leading scorers were Pappas, Amanda Roberts and Michelle Lawrence at 12 points apiece. Roberts also collected nine kills, the same as Lawrence, while Pappas had eight. The second set was similar to that of the first match with the Regals pulling a win after a 7-0 scoring drive to put them at set point, 24-13. Tetherow helped push Cal Lutheran farther into the win column with one ace and 18 digs.
CLU def. East Tex. Baptist 3-0 (25-13, 25-16, 25-18)
Lawrence turned it on for the Regals and picked up 11 kills and 13 points. Roberts facilitated nine kills of her own and six digs. A trio of Regals, Stewart, Pappas and Lundgren, all added eight kills. Stewart also had the same amount of digs at eight. Dianna Rohrer and Mikayla Dobson also helped the Regals in key spots. Rohrer had two kills while Dobson had six assists and three digs. CLU had six service aces between three players, Tetherow, Roberts and Molly Holloway who had half of the aces, with one of them ending the first set with the Regals on top. Smith contributed in the win with 38 assists while Nua claimed four kills and three digs.
CLU def. No. 6 Emory 3-0 (27-25, 25-22, 25-20)
No. 6 Emory was able to make the Regals work for their win. The first set proved especially difficult for CLU where the lead was exchanged point-for-point between the Regals and Eagles. Cal Lutheran came together and took the lead in the beginning of the second and third set and held on until the end. Roberts was a strong point in the Regals game finishing with 13 kills and eight digs. Stewart shared the same number of digs and had 12 kills overall. Lawrence and Smith had seven digs, respectively, while Smith also 35 assists and three kills. The captain libero Tetherow acquired 21 digs and the only two aces for the Regals.
Notables: Nua started in her first set this season for the Regals against East Texas Baptist. Tetherow had 74 digs and four aces, while Lawrence facilitated 38 kills after all four games.
Next Up: Cal Lutheran (8-0) will host its first Southern Californian Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) contest against Whittier (2-7) in the Gilbert Arena this Tuesday, Sept. 13 at 7:00 p.m.
