THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - In a game that featured more fouls than shots, the Cal Lutheran women's soccer team grinded to a 1-1 tie with Whittier in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) play on a brisk Wednesday evening inside Rolland Stadium.
After a fairly quiet start to the match, the Regals saw their first real opportunity come with 15 minutes remaining in the first half. Riley Martin raced down the left side of the pitch and sent a perfect cross into the box that Kali Youngdahl connected on, but sent just high over the goal.
In the 59th minute of action, another opportunity arose as Olivia Leyva sent a ball into the box on a free kick that Nina Winsick sent just high as well.
Just three minutes later, however, Martin lofted a ball into the box off a corner kick that found Julia Kearns on the opposite end, and the defender headed it into the back of the net for the second goal of her career.
In the 74th minute, the Poets converted the equalizer after capitalizing on a free kick from thirty yards out. Jennifer Muise booted a line drive into a crowd that Leila Afrasiyabi was somehow able to head into the goal.
The Regals had a few more chances and pressed offensively in both overtime periods but a golden goal was not in the cards.
CLU outshot the Poets 15-13 in the match and held a 4-3 edge in corner kicks. Coral Hasley logged six saves in goal for the Violet and Gold and Youngdahl led the team with three total shots. Sarah Tadeusiak, Ryley Settles, Sarah Wardle, Leyva and Kearns each recorded two shots apiece.
Cal Lutheran (9-1-2, 4-1-2 SCIAC) will take to the road this Saturday, Oct. 8 for a match against Redlands at 7:00 p.m.
