THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - The No. 7 Cal Lutheran women's volleyball team competed against Pomona-Pitzer in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) action and came away with a clean sweep of the Sagehens 3-0 (25-19, 26-24, 25-22) in Gilbert Arena on Tuesday night.
The Regals began the game on top scoring the first point of the first set and grabbed an early five-point lead at 10-5. Pomona-Pitzer was able to come back and tie it at 12 all and then take the lead on the next point, 13-12. The Regals had to fight back and score seven points in a row to take the lead 19-13. CLU held this lead until the Sagehens were able to come back and cut the deficit to five, however, the Regals captured the set 25-19.
The second set started slow for the Regals with the Sagehens scoring the first two points. CLU was able to get going and tie it up at five. Pomona-Pitzer was not backing down and held the lead by two for most of the set. The Regals fought back and tied it up at 24 all. CLU was able to take their only lead of the game at 25-24 and the only one they needed because they took the set on the next point, 26-24.
CLU scored the first three points of the third set to take an early lead and maintained this lead after the Sagehens tied it up at six all. The Sagehens were able to close the gap and tied it at 18, but this did not stop the Regals. CLU took control and took the match at 25-22.
Hope Stewart continued her hot play with 15 kills and seven digs for the Regals. Amanda Roberts finished with a double-double with 13 kills and 10 digs. Sarah Pappas and Monica Lundgren had nine and six kills, respectively. Jamie Smith added 39 assists and 15 digs, while Nicki Tetherow contributed 15 digs. Molly Holloway was the only Regal with a service ace and she totaled four, two of which were back-to-back in the first set.
Cal Lutheran (14-4, 5-2 SCIAC) will take on Caltech on the road in the Braun Athletic Center this Thursday, Oct. 6 at 7:00 p.m.
