THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - The No. 7 Cal Lutheran women's volleyball team hosted Redlands in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) play on Saturday night and took down the Bulldogs in straight sets 3-0 (25-13, 25-20, 25-20) on an evening dedicated to promoting awareness for breast cancer.
The Regals started off the first set with the first three points. The Bulldogs were able to grab two points before the Regals went on a tear and scored five points in a row making the score 8-2 CLU. CLU was able to hold the Bulldogs off by scoring three more points in a row to take a 16-8 lead. The Violet and Gold defense would only allowed five more points before CLU closed out the set 25-13.
The Regals started off the second set with a quick 5-0 lead and took five of the next seven points to go up 10-2. The Bulldogs pushed back and were able to score six points on the Regal defense to make the score 18-15, but it was not enough to overcome the Regals offense. CLU scored the last three points in the set and finished at 25-20.
The third set began on the Bulldogs side after they scored the first two points. The Regals quickly rebounded and scored two more of their own, but the Bulldogs came back and took the lead 6-4. CLU did not quit and score nine consecutive points with Jamie Smith on service, she also had two service aces. This scoring run solidified the set for the Regals, and the Bulldogs were not able to come back from the large Regals lead. CLU won the set 25-14, and with it the match.
Monica Lundgren and Hope Stewart lead all players in kills with 10 apiece while Stewart also had five digs. Sarah Pappas and Amanda Roberts each had nine kills, Roberts was one kill away from a double-double with 11 digs. Smith had 35 assists, two service aces and two digs, while Nicki Tetherow had 18 digs for the Regals defense. CLU combined for a .333 hitting percentage.
Cal Lutheran (18-4, 9-2 SCIAC) will travel to Chapman (10-11, 5-4 SCIAC) to play the Panthers in hopes of earning its 19th win of the season this Tuesday, Oct. 18 at 7:00 p.m.
