THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - In a matchup between two of the top teams in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC), the Cal Lutheran women's soccer team took an early lead before settling for a 1-1 draw against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps inside Rolland Stadium on Wednesday night.

Sitting in third place in the conference, the Regals looked to jump ahead of CMS in the standings and earn redemption for a road loss to the Athenas earlier this season, their only defeat of the year.

To start the match, both teams battled for possession but neither presented any threat to score until the Regals created some chances midway through the first half. The first good look on goal came from Kali Youngdahl who, after finding herself out in front down the left side of the pitch, fired a shot back across her body to the right side that was just saved by a diving CMS keeper.

Youngdahl had another shot on target minutes later, after the Athenas goalie came off her line but reached up just high enough to prevent a CLU goal. Nina Winsick added to the first half near misses, as she booted a powerful shot just inches over the goal in the 27th minute.

After a flurry of chances, Katelyn Kimball brought the crowd to its feet with a scintillating goal in the 40th minute to put the Violet and Gold on the board. The senior forward warded off her defender and struck a shot from 30 yards out that deflected off the crossbar and straight down into the goal.

In the second half, the teams played tight the whole way through with CLU holding just a 4-3 edge in shots. The Athenas, however, ramped up their offensive attack as the second half neared to an end and were able to find the equalizer in the 86th minute after Megan Lo broke free and scored.

In both overtime periods, the Regals dominated possession and had a few looks at goal, including two corner kick opportunities, but eventually finished with a tie.

Winsick tallied a game-high four shots while Kimball, Youngdahl and Ryley Settles each finished with two apiece. CLU outshot CMS 13-10 and finished with a 3-1 edge in corner kicks. Coral Hasley recorded five saves in all 110:00 minutes in front of the net.

Cal Lutheran (11-1-3, 5-1-3) continues conference play this Saturday, Oct. 15 against Chapman inside Rolland Stadium at 7:30 p.m.
