THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - On Monday afternoon the Cal Lutheran women's soccer team took on Illinois Tech in a non-conference matchup inside Rolland Stadium and came away with the 5-1 victory, with goals coming from four different players.
After a silent 30 minutes from both teams, Illinois Tech nearly capitalized on a free kick from 25 yards out when Katie Hoefgen sent the ball off the left post, but the Regal defense quickly cleared the ball, ending the attack. Shortly after, CLU got on the board first when Rachel Schroeder fired a shot from 30 yards out that ricocheted off of the crossbar and flew down into the back of the net, giving the Regals the 1-0 lead.
Cal Lutheran struck early in the second half when Izzy Chelini recovered a loose ball in front of the Illinois Tech goal, and tapped the ball in to score her first career goal and increase the lead to two. The Violet and Gold nearly added another in the 63rd minute when Nina Winsick sent the ball toward the upper left corner, but Jessica Park dove to tip the ball up off the crossbar, and out of play. However just two minutes later, Winsick would score as she dribbled the ball up the left side and spun back into the middle, delivering a perfect strike past the outstretched hand of the goalkeeper to make the lead 3-0.
Tessa Dwyer scored her first career goal for the Regals in the 88th minute off of a CLU corner kick, and added another shortly after off of the assist from Nikole Prelooker. The lone goal for the Scarlet Hawks came when Anida Phetchanpheng's initial shot was blocked, and Golbou Azadeh-Tehran was there to put the loose ball away for the goal.
Cal Lutheran (11-1-2) will be back inside Rolland Stadium on Wednesday, Oct. 12 at 7:00 p.m. to take on Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) matchup.
