WHITTIER, Calif. - The Cal Lutheran women's soccer team traveled to Whittier for a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) matchup where they fell behind early and eventually lost 2-1 to the Poets on Wednesday night.
Offensive Highlights: Bianca Deardorff headed in her second goal of the season off an assist from Olivia Leyva late in the game to put the Regals on the scoreboard after trailing 2-0. Raquel Weckhurst tied with Deardorff with a team-high three shots and freshman midfielder Emily Williams added two. Seven other Regals fired off a shot in the game. CLU outshot the Poets 15-9, but were edged 5-3 in corner kicks.
Defensive Highlights: Goalkeeper Coral Hasley logged four saves for CLU and junior Stacy Choate-Ciletti made her first appearance of the season in front of the net.
The Opponent: Whittier took an early lead in the 16th minute after Lauren Kai rebounded a shot that hit off the post and tapped it into the goal. The Poets held a 1-0 lead until the 79th minute when Miranda Yzabal hit a shot from distance that gave Whittier a 2-0. Madison Shipherd tallied a game-high four shots while goalkeeper Alexi Cruz notched six saves.
Next Up: Cal Lutheran (3-5-1, 2-2-1 SCIAC) will continue conference action on the road this Saturday, Oct. 3 at Pomona-Pitzer at 4:00 p.m.
