LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The Cal Lutheran women's soccer team had its biggest scoring output of the season, fueled by a Raquel Weckhurst hat-trick, in a 4-2 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) road victory over Occidental on Wednesday night.
Offensive Highlights: Weckhurst erupted on the offensive end for CLU, pouring in three goals on five shots with four shots on goal. The senior transfer now has six goals to lead the team and ranks first in the league with five conference goals. She gave the Violet and Gold an early lead with a score in the fourth minute, but Occidental responded right before the break to tie the game. Bianca Deardorff scored at the start of the second half, in the 49th minute, to give the Regals back the lead and Weckhurst added two more late goals to put the game out of reach. Deardorff added three shots, all coming on goal, while Jordan Miller, Kali Youngdahl and Keara Schromm also added shots in the game. CLU outshot Occidental 14-11 and held a 5-1 edge in cornerkicks.
Defensive Highlights: Goalkeeper Coral Hasley came away with two saves, after a strong defensive unit held the Tigers to just four shots on goal throughout the game. The junior goalie currently leads the SCIAC in total saves with 26.
The Opponent: Megan Maher and Alana Hillman provided the scoring for Occidental. Maher tied the game 1-1 with a goal in the 35th minute and Hillman's came later in the second half. Giuliani Zanutta led the team with three shots and Julie Khil added an assist.
Next Up: Cal Lutheran (3-4, 2-1 SCIAC) will return to Rolland Stadium this Saturday, Sept. 26 for a conference matchup against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at 7:00 p.m.
