WHITTIER, Calif. - The No. 7 Cal Lutheran women's volleyball team cruised to a 3-0 sweep over the Whittier Poets 25-17, 25-15, 25-15 in their first Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) road matchup on Tuesday night.
Offensive Highlights: Michelle Lawrence and Sarah Pappas led the way for the Regals with eight kills apiece while Allie Eason added six and Hope Stewart came through with five. Sophomore setter Jamie Smith was strong facilitating the offense and racked up 29 assists. She now has 488 total assists for the season and is average 10.38 assists per set.
Defensive Highlights: Pappas had a strong all-around game, leading both sides with six total blocks while Amanda Roberts added five and Lawrence notched a pair. The Regals were a force at the net all night and finished with 16 total blocks as a team. Junior libero Nicki Tetherow led the way with eight digs and Smith was second on the team with five.
The Opponent: Whittier took an early lead in the first set before the Violet and Gold rattled off seven consecutive points to change the momentum for the rest of the game. Down 12-9 in set number two, CLU rallied for 11 straight points to put the game out of reach. Casie Lowden and Rebecca Slattery led the Poets with seven kills apiece and Torrey Mitsunaga tallied eight assists.
Next Up: Cal Lutheran (12-2, 2-0 SCIAC) will square off against No. 9 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps this Saturday, Sept. 26 at 6:00 p.m. inside Gilbert Arena.
