THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - Tonight the No. 6 Cal Lutheran women's volleyball team earned another Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) 3-0 sweep, taking Pomona-Pitzer down 25-17, 25-20, 25-20 inside of the Gilbert Arena.
There was no better way to celebrate a 21st birthday for an All-American than with a win. Not only did CLU help that become a reality for Allie Eason, but the senior outside hitter led all players with 14 kills, adding 12 digs for a double-double. She added two block assists and a service ace.
Sarah Pappas added nine kills and Pua Mo'okini-Oliveira finished with eight as well as eight digs to flirt with a double-double off the bench. Pappas was responsible for three of the eight block assists on the night. Jamie Smith also finished with a double-double, providing 38 assists and 10 digs. Amanda Roberts matched Smith with 10 digs.
In a lopsided match, the Violet and Gold jumped out to a quick 9-3 lead and opened the gap to 15-8, forcing a PP timeout. Although the Sagehens pulled within four, the game belonged to the Regals. In the series, Lawrence and Pappas each put down five kills and Eason added three. Smith placed two services aces on the hardwood.
During the second set, although CLU started the same way, with a 10-3 lead, the Hens chipped away and took an 18-17 lead, which turned into a 21-18 advantage for the Regals. Mo'okini-Oliveira put the game in the books with her third kill of the set. Eason led the way with five kills and Pappas earned a solo stop at the net.
A back-and-forth battle in the third took a turn for the Violet and Gold when Mo'okini-Oliveira used a solo block to give CLU a 4-3 lead. The Regals moved the ball around and maneuvered their way to a 10-5 advantage and although the Hens made things interesting late at 22-20, an Eason kill followed by a Dianna Rohrer kill and an Eason ace notched the 25-20 game win to seal the match.
Pomona-Pitzer (8-8, 3-4 SCIAC) was led by a 10-kill, 10-dig night from Stephanie Sun while Michelle Schultz tallied a match-high 19 digs.
Cal Lutheran (17-2, 7-0) travels to Caltech on Thursday, Oct. 8 to face the Beavers at 7:30 p.m. inside of the Braun Gymnasium.
