CLAREMONT, Calif. - A back-and-forth tilt this afternoon on the pitch at Pomona-Pitzer went in favor of the host Sagehens as the Cal Lutheran women's soccer team came up short in a 4-3 road loss in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) action in spite of a valiant effort late in the contest.
Offensive Highlights: Despite holding a 6-2 shooting advantage through the first 33 minutes minute, CLU trailed 1-0 until Mallory Carcich punched in her second goal of the season off a corner kick from Raquel Weckhurst to knot things up at 1-1. Although the Regals notched just one goal in the opening 45 minutes, seven of the nine attempts were on target. In the second half, CLU cut a pair of two-goal deficits in half on Weckhurst goals. The first was assisted by Katelyn Kimball with Olivia Leyva earning the second assist to pull the score to 4-3 with just over five minutes remaining.
Defensive Highlights: Coral Hasley worked all 90 minutes, turning away one Pomona-Pitzer shot.
The Opponent: Pomona-Pitzer struck first in the 7th minute when Sofia Barsher assisted on a goal from Alyssa Kim to put the Hens up 1-0 early on. Minutes after CLU scored to tie things, PP scored again when Agueda Dudley-Berrios gave the home team the edge again just before halftime. Out of the intermission, the Sagehens looked to Peri Cuppens for the third goal of the day and Kim earned her second score of the contest with Cuppens wrangling in the assist to give Pomona-Pitzer a 4-2 lead with 11:30 remaining in regulation.
Notables: Today 24 different Regals stepped onto the field. CLU held a 16-8 shots advantage and earned five corners while limiting Pomona-Pitzer to one. In total, 12 shots were on target for the Regals. Weckhurst took five shots, which were all on point and Deardorff finished with three that were also on target. With two more goals, Weckhurst widened her conference lead with eight goals this season.
Next Up: Cal Lutheran (3-6-1, 2-3-1 SCIAC) returns to William Rolland Stadium on Wednesday, Oct. 7 for a 7:00 p.m. meeting with La Verne to wrap up the First Round of SCIAC action.
