Second Half Surge Propels Kingsmen Past Sagehens

Box Score $website.include("options")

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Playing on the road for the first time in over a month did not faze the Cal Lutheran men's basketball team as the Kingsmen stretched their win-streak to eight games with a 62-55 victory over Pomona-Pitzer this afternoon at the Voelkel Gymnasium in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) action.

A second half surge propelled the Kingsmen who trailed 21-20 at the intermission. Leading by a pair late in the contest, Arik Smith took over with a blocked layup on a PP fast break and responded with a bucket at CLU's end of the court. He came back with another steal and breakaway layup to give the Violet and Gold a six point lead before hitting a pair of tough 18-footers. In addition to Smith's scoring, Coltrane Powdrill was instrumental down the stretch with key free-throws, going 12-for-14 overall, to put the win in the books.

Leading the way for Cal Lutheran was Powdrill who nearly notched a double-double, falling one rebound short with nine to go along with a game-high 18 points. He also led all players with four assists and tallied two blocks. Smith finished with a 15-point game and added seven boards, four steals and three assists. Both Dan Wade and John Green chipped in with nine points and three rebounds.

Pomona-Pitzer (2-10, 0-3 SCIAC) looked to Adrian Brandon for 15 points and Kyle McAndrew for 14. Brandon also led the Sagehens with nine rebounds while sharing the team-high with three assists.

Cal Lutheran (9-2, 3-0) hits the road again on Tuesday, Jan. 13 for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off in Pasadena, Calif. at Caltech.
