REDLANDS, Calif. - Less than 24 hours after defeating nationally ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps the No. 2 Cal Lutheran volleyball team cruised past Redlands in another Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) contest. The 3-0 sweep included victories of 25-16, 25-10 and 25-15 margins.
For the second straight night Sarah Pappas was instrumental in the victory. Tonight the sophomore recorded 13 kills without an error on 16 swings for an .812 hitting percentage to lead all players while adding a pair of service aces and the only solo block of the match.
Another strong showing came from Monica Lundgren who earned five kills on eight attempts for a .500 average with a pair of block assists. Molly Holloway was perfect in her two chances. Kennedy Peters produced 21 assists and the digging duties were split tonight with Hope Stewart and Nicki Tetherow tallying 15 apiece. Allie Eason also recorded 10 digs, adding six kills in her return to action.
Redlands came out fired up, but when back-to-back kills from Hannah Orlandi broke a 7-7 tie the Regals reeled off four straight points with Dianna Rohrer serving. At that point CLU stole the momentum and rode that to a 25-16 final with Pappasfittingly ending the game with her ninth kill of the set.
In game two, CLU never trailed and built a large lead behind Tetherow who stepped up to the line for 14 straight serves, with 13 ending in Cal Lutheran points for a 17-2 advantage. Again Pappas put the set away by finding the court with a kill at 25-10.
The third game was more of the same, starting with a kill from Stewart and ending with one from Carson Nicodemus. In between, Pappas followed Tetherow's lead as CLU strung together six straight points off her serves to break a 2-2 tie and open an 8-2 gap. Cal Lutheran never looked back as numerous players contributed in the 25-15 win.
Redlands (1-9, 1-4 SCIAC) combined for just 17 total kills, seven of which came from Ashton Martin. Lauren Ellingwood handed out 12 assists and Madison Brazeel led the team with 12 digs.
Cal Lutheran (15-1, 4-0) will be back on the court on Tuesday, Sept. 30 when the Regals host the Chapman Panthers at 7:30 p.m. inside of the Gilbert Arena.
