THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - Facing Pomona-Pitzer, one of the top teams in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) thus far in 2014, the Cal Lutheran women's soccer team opened an early lead and though the Sagehens tied things late in the second half, the Regals hung on for a double overtime draw in their first league OT showing of the fall.
At the beginning of the game the teams split possessions and in the 25th minute the Violet and Gold broke through when Kali Youngdahl scored the first collegiate goal of her career on an assist from Katie Moyer to give CLU an advantage.
The defensive unit of Mallory Carcich, Olivia Leyva and Jenna Malinowski helped the Regals maintain the lead going into the intermission.
Overall, CLU outshot Pomona-Pitzer seven to three in the first frame, but the offense would switch hands in the second stanza as the Sagehens took six shots to the Regals' two.
Seventy-five minutes into the game Nicole Quilliam had the best opportunity of the night for PP on a breakaway, but just as she shot, CLU goalkeeper Kristin Bailey went into a slide and blocked the shot, keeping the Hens off the board. Unfortunately, the visiting squad would find the back of the net less than 10 minutes later. At the 84:37 mark, Sofia Barsher cruised down the sideline and chipped the ball to Abby Onderwyzer Gold for the equalizing goal, which was her fourth score of the season.
For the final five minutes of regulation the teams would battle, but nothing would come into permission on either side, sending the contest into overtime.
In the first extra period the ball was flying at the cages on both ends of the field as the teams combined for six shots. Both teams had opportunities, though each was inches off target. In the 96th minute Sierra Duarte fired off a shot that sailed just high and two minutes after that Barsher did the same for Pomona-Pitzer, but it went just wide of the net.
The second OT was also an offensive one with a trio of combined shots and five corner kicks for Cal Lutheran. With under a minute to play CLU generated some chances, but the team was pressing and too anxious, misfiring. It was nearly a walk-off for PP in the final second as Barsher earned a one-on-no one and kicked as the clock ticked down to zero, but the ball was directly at Bailey for the save, her sixth of the night.
Youngdahl and Moyer took four and three shots for the Regals, respectively and Bianca Deardorff finished with a pair. Each had one on goal and the fourth aimed shot came from Katrina Rocha.
Pomona-Pitzer (5-2-1, 3-0-1) was paced by Barsher and Nadia Alaiyan with four shots apiece. Gold took two with both on target.
Cal Lutheran (3-4-2, 1-2-1) returns to the pitch on Wednesday, Oct. 1 for a home game against Whittier at 7:00 p.m. inside of William Rolland Stadium.
