LA VERNE, Calif. - On the road in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) action the Cal Lutheran women's soccer team fell victim to the La Verne Leopards who doubled up the Regals 2-1 tonight at Ortmayer Stadium.
The Violet and Gold generated plenty of shots with 14 while LV took just 10, but the two on goal both got to the back of the net to prove the difference makers for the Leos. The Regals also earned three corner kicks, not allowing any.
Things looked bright early as CLU took a 1-0 advantage in the 14th minute when Katie Moyer scored on a free kick from 30 yards out as the only scoring in the opening half.
Unfortunately for the Regals, the Leopards staged a second stanza comeback, netting the equalizing goal less than three minutes into play after the intermission and added the winning score in the 52nd minute. The first came on an Alexa Smith goal, which was assisted by Cassidy Schweiger and Kelsey Varner before Natalie Vasquez set up Jamie Weaver for the game winner.
CLU looked to Kali Youngdahl for six shots while Moyer fired off four. The duo combined for a half a dozen on target as Youngdahl took four shots on goal. Katelyn Kimball was the only other player with more than one attempt as she earned three opportunities.
La Verne (3-3, 1-1 SCIAC) was led by three shots from Weaver and two from Smith. Goalkeeper Delanie Pacheco improved to 3-3 on the season with six saves in 90 minutes.
Cal Lutheran (2-4-1, 0-2-0) will look to put the first win of the season in the books on Wednesday, Sept. 24 when the Regals host Redlands for a 7:00 p.m. showdown at Rolland Stadium.
