CLAREMONT, Calif. - Three days after earning its way in to the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Women's Tennis Championships in a play-in game against Occidental, the Cal Lutheran women's tennis team suffered two setbacks during the opening rounds Friday. In the first round, Cal Lutheran fell 5-0 to top-seeded Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. Later in the afternoon, the Regals were downed by Chapman 8-1.
The Regals had a shot to earn two doubles points against the Athenas after Lindsay Murphy, Dana Raugust, Rebecca Drake and Sarah Baker all played tough in their respective matches. In the No. 2 grouping, Murphy and Raugust nearly topped Crystal Lim and Yvonne Likomanova 8-5 and then in the No. 3 pairing, Drake and Baker almost took down Erin Coughlan and Sheena Patel 8-6.
Cal Lutheran earned its first point of the day in the night-cap when Murphy and Raugust kept up their strong doubles play, this time defeating Madison Mathis and Madeline Saunders of Chapman 8-2.
Shelby Kubota almost had another point for the Regals during her No. 4 singles match where she won the first 6-4.Unforunately, her counterpart Saunders, would rally in the final two sets winning 6-3 and 10-3.
Cal Lutheran (4-14) will have a chance to take seventh place when it takes on No. 7 seeded Caltech on Saturday, May 3, at 10:00 a.m.
