LOS ANGELES, Calif. - In a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) road contest this morning, the Cal Lutheran men's water polo team took down Occidental by a 10-8 margin.
CLU jumped out to a 2-1 lead and expanded the gap to 6-2 at the intermission. Again, the Kingsmen were shutout in the third period, while allowing five Oxy goals, but a strong fourth frame showing saw the Violet and Gold add four to their tally while allowing just one to clinch the victory.
Sophomore Taylor McMaster netted a hat-trick to lead Cal Lutheran while Jack Acampora added a pair. The remaining goals came from Mike Arteaga, Shea Craig, AJ Franklin, Camron Hauer and Ryan Moguel. Zack Card provided a pair of assists and Hauer, McMaster and Asante Sefa-Boakye each chipped in with one as well. The only drawn ejection of the game came from Arteaga.
Defensively, Jesse Owen matched his season-high with 14 saves, which he has now reached four times in 2014. He was also one of seven players with a multi-steal game. Leading the way today was Card with five steals while Craig and Sefa-Boakye each grabbed four. McMaster added three steals to his line today and Tyler Graper and Mike Potter each finished with a pair.
Cal Lutheran (7-13, 3-4 SCIAC) is off for a week before closing out the first round of action in league play on Saturday, Nov. 15 at 11:00 a.m. against Pomona-Pitzer. Prior to the game the senior class will be recognized.
