REDLANDS, Calif. - The outcome on the second day of the 2014 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Men's Water Polo Championships was much more favorable for Cal Lutheran as the Kingsmen defeated Occidental 16-12 this afternoon.
CLU and Oxy began the day by exchanging goals in the first and went into the second stanza knotted at 4-4. After the second eight minute period the Kingsmen had opened a 7-4 lead as the defensive unit kept the Tigers scoreless in the frame. After the intermission the lead continued to grow with Cal Lutheran outscoring Occidental 5-4 to maintain a 12-8 advantage. During the final quarter the Violet and Gold tacked on four more goals with the ultimate game-winner coming from AJ Franklin in a man-up situation at the 7:15 mark.
For the second straight day Zach Graper was unstoppable on offense, adding four goals to his five-spot from Friday. Also netting a hat-trick for the Violet and Gold was Jack Acampora while seven other players added to the tally as well. Both Franklinand Tyler Graper finished with a pair in the win. Acampora also recorded a team-high two assists and shared the lead for drawn ejections with Ryan Moguel as each earned two.
Defensively, Jesse Owen was a force at the net with 13 saves and he also chipped in with a pair of steals and an assist. T. Graper led the team with four steals and Zack Card and Camron Hauer came up with three steals apiece. T. Graper also had the only field block of the day for CLU.
Cal Lutheran (9-14, 5-5 SCIAC) will round out the 2014 schedule on Sunday, Nov. 23 at 10:45 a.m. against La Verne in the fifth place game. Whittier and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps will play for the SCIAC title at 2:15 p.m. at the Thompson Aquatics Center.
