THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - The Cal Lutheran women's soccer team continued their torrid streak with a 3-0 take down of the Occidental Tigers on Wednesday night at Rolland Stadium. Senior goalie Kiki Bailey notched career save number 200 with her second save in the first half and she finished with 10 in the game.
Bailey ranks third all-time in career saves in CLU history and she is second all-time in career shutouts with 23. She is just one off the leader, Amy Walz (1993-96), who has 24.
The Regals got the scoring started in the 18th minute when Bri Pinal poked the ball through the defense and across the field to Bianca Deardorff, who fielded the ball and punched it to the left corner of the goal for the 1-0 lead. For Deardorff, the goal is her third of the season and second in three games.
In the 22nd minute, Oxy looked to tie up the game as Michaela Tsuha ran down the right side of the pitch and fired a shot across her body as Bailey came running out. The ball rolled slowly in front of the goal and just missed a foot to the left.
After dodging a bullet, the Regals, who are now 10-0-2 in their last 12 games, tried to add another goal right before the half. In the 42nd minute, Kelly Morro passed the ball ahead of the Tigers defenders out in front to Kirsten Bergseth. With the goalie running out applying pressure, Bergseth flipped the ball up and over the goalie but the shot hit off the post and deflected out of bounds.
CLU capitalized on their next opportunity which came in the second half in the 67th minute. After the Violet and Gold defense cleared the ball to midfield, Kali Youngdahl took advantage and dribbled past everyone for the breakaway. Calm and collected, Youngdahl stroked the shot past the goalie to the right side of the goal for the 2-0 lead.
Just two minutes later, Charlotte Rosen took the corner kick for the Regals and placed a nice ball in to the box for Olivia Leyva, who headed it in to the goal, giving CLU the three goal advantage.
The Tigers went full force offensively in the final 20 minutes of the game, but the Cal Lutheran defense held strong. Bailey made a few critical saves including a leaping save where she just did reach the ball to knock it over the goal. Stacey Choate-Ciletti replaced Bailey in the final minutes and held on to keep the Tigers without a goal all night.
Oxy outshot the Regals 19-13 on the game with 14 of those shots coming in the second half. Cal Lutheran, however, created more opportunities with a 9-5 edge in corner kicks. Leyva led the team with five shots, including three on goal, and Deardorff added three shots. Youngdahl had two shots in the game along with Bergseth while Pinal added one.
Cal Lutheran (12-4-3, 9-2-2 SCIAC) will play their final regular season game this Saturday, Nov. 1, at 4:00 p.m. against Chapman at Rolland Stadium for Senior Night.
